Renovated Pearl River County Circuit Courtroom reopens Aug. 21

Pearl River County Circuit Court will convene in a newly renovated courtroom on Monday, Aug. 21, at the County Courthouse in Poplarville. Circuit Judge Prentiss Harrell will preside over an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m.

Renovations include an electronic evidence presentation system, improved acoustics, plumbing improvements and access that conforms to the Americans With Disabilities Act.

“I’m very pleased with it,” Judge Harrell said. He praised the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors for their investment in restoring and improving the historic courthouse.

The Courthouse dates from 1920. The original construction began in 1918 and was completed in 1920 at a total cost of $130,000.00.

Restoration followed requirements of the Department of Archives and History. The work was funded by a $600,000 Community Development Block Grant for ADA renovations, matched by $600,000 provided by the Board of Supervisors.

Court proceedings were held in the County Court courtroom in Picayune starting in November 2016 while renovation was underway in the courtroom in Poplarville. County offices located at the Poplarville courthouse did not move.
